Artist in Residence

We are pleased to announce Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra violinist, Mr. Paul Hauer as Barcel Suzuki String Academy's Artist in Residence!

Paul Hauer, violin
Violinist Paul Hauer joined the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 2016. Solo concerts have brought Mr. Hauer to the countries of Germany, Greece, France, the Czech Republic, and the Philippines. Chamber music and orchestral concerts have brought him to Italy, Singapore, Mexico, and China. Mr. Hauer was Guest Concertmaster of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic for an all-Mozart program in 2015, and his recording of orchestral excerpts was chosen by Nathan Cole to win the Classical Scholarship Competition at Artist Works in 2014.

Mr. Hauer traveled to Athens in May of 2015 to participate in the 4th Leonidas Kavakos International Masterclass. One month earlier, he performed the Sibelius Violin Concerto with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. Other honors include winning the Indianapolis Matinee Musicale Collegiate Competition in 2013, which resulted in a performance at the Indiana Landmarks Center. In the summer of 2011, he toured Europe with the Denver Young Artists Orchestra as the soloist for the Barber Violin Concerto. Mr. Hauer has performed chamber music with renowned musicians such as Jorja Fleezanis, Timothy Pitts, Roberto Diaz, and Lynn Harrell.

Early violin training came from Ferenc Fenyo and Stephane Tran Ngoc. He completed his Bachelor of Music at Oberlin Conservatory, graduating from the studio of David Bowlin. Mr. Hauer began working with Addison Teng in 2009 and studied with him for three summers at the Montecito International Music Festival. He received his Master of Music degree from the Jacobs School of Music with Alexander Kerr. Mr. Hauer is a Wisconsin native and enjoys performing at the Peninsula Music Festival in Door County during the summer.

Mr. Hauer's extensive solo and orchestral playing experience bring a unique and exciting element to Barcel students' and families' musical learning experience. As Artist in Residence, Mr. Hauer is charged with inspiring and motivating students, parents and teachers through performance, masterclass teaching, individual coaching sessions and large group coachings.

Performances by Mr. Hauer will take place periodically. These are opportunities for inspiration and exposure to true artistry in an up close and personal environment.

Masterclasses are scheduled throughout the year on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30pm in Wauwatosa. The masterclass dates are October 17, January 16 and April 24. Barcel students participating in the masterclass will gain a deeper and more artistic understanding of their playing technique and music. The masterclass is open to students levels Bk. 3 and above on recommendation from a BSSA teacher. The masterclass participation fee is $35.00.

Individual Coaching Sessions are intensive one hour coaching sessions during which an in-depth study of a student's violin technique and musicality can be explored from a different perspective. These coaching sessions are open to all students Bk. 4 and above, are set-up by BSSA based on the availability of the BSSA teacher, the BSSA student and the Artist in Residence. The Individual Coaching Sessions fee is $70.00.

Large Group Coachings are scheduled during Brioso rehearsals. Again this year Mr. Hauer will be lending his expertise and inspired musical ideas to Brioso rehearsals.
