Baby/Toddler Class

About Suzuki ECE Classes
Suzuki Early Childhood Education Classes are for children ages 0-3 and their parent(s). Suzuki piano instructor, Dorothy Jones, developed these classes at the request of Dr. Suzuki. Sharing the same goals as the instrumental lessons, Suzuki ECE classes seek to do more than just develop a child's musical ability. They aim to build on the child's natural delight in learning and lay the foundation for future learning and the development of the whole child. The material used in class - songs, creative movement, familiar nursery rhymes, and percussion instruments - is the means whereby this is accomplished. Note: These classes are not lessons on any one instrument nor are they designed to prepare children for a specific instrument.

Classes are currently in session. The structure of the curriculum makes it easy for newcomers to join at any time.

FAQ
"Will this class let me know if my child has any special inborn musical talents?"
Every child has the ability to learn. This is as true of music as any other subject. It has been shown that musical ability, like language ability, begins developing even before birth. By participating in these classes and playing the Suzuki ECE CD often at home, while singing along and moving together with the music, you are creating a musical environment for your child that will develop musical talents and ability.

"Do I have to attend all the sessions? Can someone else take my place sometimes?"
It is helpful that the same parent attends the classes with the child each week. Your child depends on your encouragement and help when learning new things. In turn, the bond between parent and child is strengthened when the learning is joyful. If the same parent comes week after week, this parent can more easily observe the unfolding of the development process and learn how best to work with the child in and out of class. That said, it is fine if more than one adult accompanies the child. Both may participate, or one may watch.

"I will have more than one child participating in the class. Can I be the accompanying parent for both children?"
There must be one accompanying parent for every child in the class. The greatest gift to a child is a parent's undivided attention, thus many of our activities are one-on-one and are difficult to divide with success between two children.

"I don't feel confident about my singing. How can I participate in the class and help my child at home?"
The accompanying Suzuki ECE class CD will be your child's main "musical" guide. By playing the CD many times each day, you and your child will learn the songs well. As the parent, you will be your child's main source of encouragement and enthusiasm. If you sing (even out of tune!) and engage readily in the class activities, your child will pick up on your enthusiasm and participate with joy. In this way, you can boost your child's potential of success in learning music and begin the cycle of success breeding more success!

"How can babies and 3-year-olds share a class together?"
Since we know how readily children learn from one another, it is important for us to have different age and ability levels in the class. Additionally, children will develop social skills right along with learning music skills. Increasingly advanced skills are presented to children as they begin to gain confidence and show signs of mastery.

"Don't the children get bored with singing the same songs all the time?"
Repetition is an essential component in developing any skill. Children learn many things about music and language with repeated listening to their song repertoire. They do not learn a word or a piece of music and then discard it. They add it to their vocabulary or repertoire, gradually using it in new and more sophisticated ways. They also don't tire of songs as easily as adults do. In fact, they enjoy sharing music and rhyme with their parents over and over again!
